FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF GAGLIANO DEL CAPO
Arigliano is a small
village under the administration of Gagliano. In this village there are two
ancient
‘menhirs’,
their names are ‘Holy Spirit’ and ‘Railway station’. The village was created
when a group of families from Gagliano went to live in this part of the village,
the name of the village itself could come from the Latin words ‘ager Galiani’
that means ‘land of Gagliano’. It belonged to the County of Alessano then was
ruled by the Falconibus, the Bisignanos, the Castriota Scanderbegs, the Colossos
and the Acerbos. The Parish Church dates to the 17th century and has
a simple façade. Inside there are two beautiful paintings of St Rocco and the
Virgin. The Chapel of the Virgin was built in the 19th century and is
very simple. The Chapel of the Holy Spirit is in the countryside and is close to
a menhir. Among the native people from Arigliano we remember: Luigi Ferilli
(physician), Giovanni Donato (monk) and Vito De Blasi (obstetric).
