FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF SANTA CESAREA TERME
Cerfignano is one of the
two small villages under the administration of Santa Cesarea and its origins are still today mysterious.
Probably
in
the past there was a fortress that was built by the people from Otranto and it
was used as a lookout post. Then some people started to build their houses near
the castle and the village became bigger. It was first called Cervineanum since
on the territory there were a lot of bucks. During the feudal Age it was annexed
to Minervino di Lecce and it stayed small village under the
administration until 1922. Here you can
visit some religious monuments such as the Church of the Immaculate and the
Church of the Annunciation, that are both very simply decorated.
