FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF MINERVINO DI LECCE
Cocumola is a
small village under the administration of Minervino. The name of the village
could derive
from
the Latin “cucuma”, ‘small pot’, then we suppose that in this village there used
to be some earthenware craftsmen. The megalith of Cocumula is called ‘Cross’ and
is 3.5m high. It tells us that anyway somebody has lived here since the Age of
Bronze. In this small village there is an old tower and the Mother Church
dedicated to St Nicola. The façade of this church is richly decorated while
inside there are some elegant altars and paintings on sacred subjects.
