FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF SAN DONATO DI LECCE
Galugnano is the only
frazione of San. Donato di Lecce. Its origins are
still uncertain. According to some
historians
the first village was built during the Greek domination. Since there are no
written documents it is not possible to know the name of the families who
governed this small centre, maybe it had the same destiny of San Donato di
Lecce. Among the most important native people there are Donato Dell'Anna (
XVIII - XIX centuries) who became beloved and esteemed priest, and Paul De
Santis, who lived in the same period and, after graduating in medicine, he got
an appreciated physician of the Salento. The Baronial Palace (VI century) is
very interesting from the historical-artistic point of view. There are a lot of
religious monuments such as the Mother Church, where you can see the rests of
ancient Byzantine frescos. The Church of the Annunziata, built in the XVII
century, is richly decorated. In the Chapel of St Maria of the Pity there is a
beautiful painting representing the Crucifixion. The other most important
monuments are the Church of the Madonna of the Snow and the Church of St.
Nicholas.
