FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF CARMIANO
Even if
Magliano is only a small village it has its own coat of arms with five rings of
a chain and a small
 branch
of cherry. The village was probably founded by the Roman centurion Mallio who
won the land for the courage he had showed in war. Other scholars think that the
village was founded after the destruction of five hamlets and this would be linked
to the rings on the coat of arms while cherry trees were common in this area.
Magliano was under the administration of Carmiano also in the past and then it
has belonged to the Celestine Fathers for centuries. In the historic centre
there is the Watch tower dating to 1891. The Church of the Assumption dates to
the 19th century in Romanic style. Its painting of the Virgin with
the Child is very interesting. The chapel of Our Lady of the Carmine dates to
1880, is an aisleless church and has the beautiful statues of the Virgin and of
St Anthony. The new church of St Mary of the Assumption was built only in the
year 2000, of course in modern style. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Wood dates
probably to the 16th century and its fresco on the Nativity of Mary
dates to the same period. Unfortunately the church was damaged by a hurricane in
1870, it was rebuild then knocked down in 1967, then rebuilt again.  The
population is deeply devoted to Our Lady of the Wood and celebrates her on
September 8th.
