FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF DISO
Marittima is a
small village under the administration of Diso. The territory of this village
was inhabited
already
in the pre-Christian time and it was probably founded by the Messapi. The name
of the village comes from the Italian name for ‘sea’ since it is very close to
it. The village was invaded and sacked by the Romans, the Longobards and the
Saracens. When the Normans came, the King Tancredi included the village in the
County of Castro. It was ruled by Ruggero II, Count of Sicily, the Sangiovannis,
the Bielottos, the De Righis, the Sinerchias, the De Francos , the Orsini Del
Balzos, the Della Postas, the Gattinaras, the Ruiz De Castros, the Lopez De
Zunicas and finally the Rossis. The Miglietta Palace was built in the 18th
century on a pre-existing structure. Inside there are beautiful decorations
while inside there are some frescos. In the historic centre there are some nice
narrow streets. The Mother Church is dedicated to Our Lady of Constantinople and
dates to the 16th century. The façade is richly decorated with a
portal, an imposing statue of the Virgin and a fresco of Our Lady. The Convent
of the Dominican dates to the same period but it has been suppressed. The small
chapel of St Vitale is
also very interesting, it dates to the 16th century. Two old dovecots
can be visited in the countryside together with some
interesting fortified farms such as Masseria Casino.
