FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF LIZZANELLO
Merine is a
small village under the administration of Lizzanello. It was probably founded by
a group of
shepherds
in the 15th century. In this territory there were several green
pastures where the shepherds could lead their sheep. They built the first houses
of the village then it grew bigger and bigger. The name of the village comes
from the Latin word “mera” which means ‘pastures’. In the historic centre of
Merine there are several ‘case a corte’. The most important palace is the
Baronial Palace (16th century). The Mother Church is dedicated to Our
Lady of the Assumption. Its façade has a beautiful portal while the inside is
finely decorated. The Church of Our Lady of the Graces was built in the 18th
century and is very simple.
