FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF MAGLIE
Morigino is the small
village under the administration of Maglie and its origins are still uncertain because there are no
historical
documents
about them. It might have been founded in the IX century by a Saracen, in fact
the toponym probably comes from the word "Moor". The feudal age began in the XII
century when the king Tancredi of Altavilla incorporated this centre into the
County of Lecce and later into the Casale of Maglie. The small village under the
administration of Maglie
has an imposing Mother Church dedicated to St. John Baptist dating back
to the beginning of the XVII century. The sumptuous main
façade has a beautiful front door, two niches and three big windows. In this
church with nave and two aisles there are imposing columns surmounted by
magnificent capitals, some baroque altars, a richly decorated pulpit, a XVII
century font and some wonderful paintings representing holy images.
