FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF VERNOLE
Pisignano might have
been built in the XI century and, probably here there used to be the threshing
of the
cereals.
In fact, the toponym comes from "pisere" that means "to thresh". In feudal age
even Pisignano was given to the Bishop of Lecce and then it was annexed to
Vernole. Also in this small village under the administration there is a megalithic monument dating to
the Bronze age: its name is "Menhir Mater Domini" and it is near the homonymous
XVIII century chapel. The most ancient religious monument is the Chapel of St
Severina dating to the XVI century. The Mother Church was built at the
beginning of the XX century on the rests of an ancient XVI century church.
