     FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF SANNICOLA San Simone is a small
village under the administration of Sannicola and it is a small village. In the past it was around
two kilometres far from
 Sannicola
while now they are very near since the number of houses has increased. Probably
this small village was founded in the XVII century, when a group of
farmers decided to build their own houses by  the Church of St Simon and gave
the name of the saint to the new village.  Now the church is not in good
condition. The recovery of ancient graves and of a cave, where they used to
celebrate religious rites, testify the presence of the Basilian monks on the
territory. Here you can also visit the beautiful Church of St. Biagio, dating to
the beginning of the XX century. The façade is as simple as the inside. Outside
the urban centre there is the old Convent of the Franciscan Monks and the
Monastery of St Therese (XX century).     |
