FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF MINERVINO DI LECCE
Specchia
Gallone is the name of the second and last small village under the
administration of Minervino.
It
was probably founded by the people of Otranto for defensive purpose. The first
part of the name would then derive from the Latin “specola” while the second
word is the name of a rich and powerful lord, Gian Battista Gallone who ruled
the village in 1618. Afterwards the village was ruled by the Sangiovannis and
the Basalùs. The coat of arms of the Gallones can be seen in the Mother Church
(17th century) and in the Chapel of St Anna, a small church with
interesting frescos.
