FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF SANTA CESAREA TERME
The origins of
Vitigliano are ancient as the recovery of a menhir of the Bronze Age testifies.
In the past
there
used to be huge vineyards belonging to the noble people of Castro. In this case,
the toponym might derive from the Latin word "vitiarium" meaning vineyard.
According to an other hypothesis the centre was founded by the Roman centurion
Vitelio, who got this land for his courage on the battleground. He made build
his own house and that of his soldiers and then the village got bigger and
bigger. Here you can visit an ancient underground monument dating back to the
Messapian period and some churches as that of St Mary of the Pity and of St.
Michael Archangel, both built in the XVIII century.
