The Mother
Church is dedicated to St Michael Archangel, was built on a pre-existing 16th
century
building
and after the earthquake of 1739 was rebuild in 1743. The façade has a finely
decorated portal and niches with the statues of the saints. Inside there are
some fine altars, some paintings of the eighteenth century and a wooden statue
of St Michael. In the nearby of this church there are two columns with statues
of Our Lady and St Michael (1838 and 1839). The Palace Ferini is in the historic
centre and looks very interesting. Inside there is a small chapel that has been
deconsecrated. The patron saint of Castrignano is St Michael Archangel and the
population celebrates him on September 29th.
The nickname
of the people of Castrignano is “cuzziddhi”, the dialect word for ‘snails’. The
legend says that, while the population was taking St Joseph in procession, it
began to rain and people had to find shelter somewhere. Those snails come
outside with the rain and when the rain finished, they went to look for the
snails and left the statue of the saint in the countryside.
