FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF TRICASE
Lucugnano is
the second small village under the administration of Tricase. There is no
historical evidence
about
the origins of the village but a mythological hypothesis says that in the place
of the village there was a wood consecrated to the God Giano, which in Latin
sounds like “lucus Jani”, very similar to the name of the village. It was ruled
by the Tranis and the Alfarano – Capeces. The baronial building of Lucugnano
belonged to Girolamo Comi, an appreciated poet of the Salento. Now there is the
Town Library. The Mother Church was built in the 16th century and was
dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. It was restored several times. The
Chapel of Our Lady of the Graces dates to the 18th century has a
single altar with a painting of the Virgin. The Chapel of St Joseph is one of
the oldest and dates to the 17th century. The Chapel of the Holy
Cross was built in 1710, has a single altar with a painting of the Pity. The
Chapel of St Rocco was built in 1969. The Chapel of St Francis was built in 1719
and is close to public. The Calvary of Lucugnano is one of the biggest in this
area, it was built in 1958 by the Perrones.
