On the civic coat of arms of Matino there is a sun shining on
some mountains, so it makes reference to
 the

obscure, but some researchers think it already existed in the X century sincee
there is an important historical paper dated 1099. According to this document
the Norman Goffredo gave a monastery to the Benedectines of Nardò. After this
donation the Bizantyne rite (that found its best expression in the Cenobies of
St. Eleuterio and St. Anastasia and in some crypts) was replaced by the Latin
one. In 1191 the king Tancredi gave this feud to Filippo Personé: later it was
governed by. Later it was governed by the wise Gervaso De Matino, his son
Glicerio and finally by the Personés again until the beginning of the XVI
century, when it was ruled by the De Tufos until 1806. The most famous native

School of Venice. He became an experienced pianist and an appreciated composer
and he went to Parma. He died in 1962 after writing a symphonic poem. Raffaele
Gentile was born in 1830: he was an astronomer and he taught mathematics and
physics, he was able to foresee the solar eclipses of 1882 and 1887. He was a
