Inhabitants’name: Monteronesi |
The civic coat of arms
of Monteroni consists of three hills on a blue background. On the hill in the
middle
there is a branch of palm tree and a poplar while in the upper part of the coat
of arms there are two stars with eight points. We do not know exactly how and
when the village was founded but we can advance two hypothesis. It was probably
founded by the Greeks who were attracted by the climate and the water of this
territory. We could also suppose that the village was founded in the Roman
period and was a place where the recruits were trained to war and only after a
long an hard training period they could enter the Roman army. The name of the
village would come from the Latin words “mons tyronum” which means training
camp. The village was attacked by the Saracens and other barbarian popoulations.
When the Normans came, the king Tancredi included the village in the County of
Lecce and later it was given to the Bishop of Lecce. The village was then
ruled by De Cremonas, the Monteronis, the Martiranos, the Gattinaras, the Ruiz
De Castros and the Lopez De Zunicas. Among the famous people of this village we
remember: Salvatore Politi lived in the 19th century, he studied in the Seminary
of Lecce, became a good priest and teacher of Philosophy, chemistry and
mathematics. Luigi De Secli was born in 1897 and was a good writer and
journalist. He was the editor of the ‘Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno di Bari’ and
wrote several books. Donato Maria Imbriani lived between the 16th and
the 17th century was a good priest, poet and theologian. Nicola
Cacudi was born in 1882, he was an appreciated linguist. Alessandro Pino lived
in the 19th century, he took his degree in Law in the University of Naples and
became a skilled lawyer. He became mayor of Monteroni in 1860 and died when he
was 59. Giovanni Antonio Solazzo lived in the 17th century was theologian and
philosopher, he was very skilled in Greek, Latin and Hebrew. Vito Rizzo lived in
the 19th century was an appreciated poet and physician. He healed those who had
cholera and worked mainly in Naples.
