Inhabitants' name: Nevianesi |
The civic coat of arms
of Neviano represents two mountains on a blue background. At the top of a
mountain
there is an olive-tree and on the second one a tower and over them there is a
star with eight points. The toponyim comes from the Latin word "niveo," that
means an snowy and cold place. here are no historical documents on the origins
of the first urban centre, but only some theories. According to some historians
the first village was built during the Greek or Byzantine period while for
other researchers during the Roman time, after a battle. In that period, the
soldiers arrived in this territory to observe their enemies, but they went back
immediately because of the strong cold. The feudal age started after the arrival
of the Normans, when the king Tancredi d' Altavilla made Neviano incorporate
into the County of Lecce. Later it passed under the control of the Principality
of
Taranto, at the day of Orsini del Balzos'. Neviano was ruled by the Cicinellis,
Princes of Cursi. The last vassals were the Barons Piccioli, that governed the
centre until 1806. Among the most important local people there is Salvatore
Romano. He lived in the XIX and he was an excellent physician, philosopher and
botanist. Michele Panico lived between the XVIII and the XIX centuries.
Hefounded the first musical band of his village, and he conducted it forty
years. He made a lot of performances, getting much success. Antonio Romano was a
good doctor, agronomist and botanist. Oronzo Piccioli lived in the XIX century
and, after graduating in law, he got an important job at the Prefecture of
Lecce.
