Inhabitants'name: Nocigliesi |
The civic coat of arms
of Nociglia has a grey background and it represents a walnut-tree and three
white
lilies in a green meadow. The origins of the first inhabited centre are still
uncertain since there are no historical documents about them. Maybe this small
town was founded by the people who had managed to escape from the destruction of
Castro, happened in 1537 or by the survivors of Vaste, that was razed to the
ground in 1147 by Guglielmo il Malo. According to a legend on this territory
there was a particular place where some witches used to gather and pick up the
fruits of the walnut-trees to make magic potions and. Therefore the toponym
might derive from "walnut", that also appears on the civic coat of arms. During
the feudal age the king Tancredi of Altavilla gave Nociglia to the knight
Maranotte, who was also appointed Earl. The last vassals were the
princes of Tricase and the Gallones, that governed for an along period until
1806. One of the most famous local characters is Domenico Marzotta. He lived in
the XIX century and he was an esteemed priest. He supported a lot the
construction of the Mother Church. Vincent Longo lived between the XVIII and the
XIX centuries and he became an excellent lawyer. Franceco Del Bene was born in
1841 and he distinguished himself for his intelligence since he was a little
boy. He graduated in a short time in medicine, at the University of Naples. He
became a famous doctor and he wrote a lot of works. He died when he was 36 years
old.
