Inhabitants' name: Presiccesi |
The civic coat of arms
of Presicce has a blue background and it represents a deer drinking from a
fountain in a
green
meadow. The first village was built by the refugees coming from Specchiano,
Ugento and Pompignano in the IV century A.C. The poor people, that had been
suffering a period of drought for three years, were attracted by the presence of
abundant water. Quite for this reason, the centre was called Praesitium.
Between the V and the XVI centuries Presicce got bigger and bigger, above after
the arrival of the people who had escaped from the massacres perpetrated by the
Vandals, the Saracens, the Ostrogoths and the Turks. During the feudal age the
Norman king Tancredi of Altavilla gave this center to the knight Securo. In the
XIV century, the feud was bought by Francesco De Specula, who was succeeded by
Giovanni Barile. In the 'XV century the Queen Maria D' Enghien gave it to
Lorenzo Drini. Until the XVII century Presicce was governed by the Gonzagas,
the Braidas and the Citos. The only female descendant of this family married
Filippo Bartilotti. The last Bartilottis' heir died at the beginning of the
XVIII century, and his mother married Francesco Liguoro. The Liguoros were the
last feudal vassals they governed until 1806. The local famous people are
