Inhabitants’name: Salicesi
|
The civic coat of arms
of Salice Salentino consists of a weeping willow with a Capital "S" on the trunk.
The name
of
the village would derive from this tree (it. ‘salice’) because in the past there
were many weeping willows in this area. We suppose that the village was founded
in the 10th century by a group of Basilian monks running away from
the persecutions of Leone Isaurico. The monks were sent away in the 11th
century by the Normans that brought the Latin religious rite. However, the
village could also have been founded by Raimondello Orsini del Balzo, Count of
Lecce, in the 14th century when he bought the Principality of Taranto
from Luigi I of Angevin. He built a big castle and five houses that he called
“cinqueni”. This small centre grew bigger and bigger and became a village. At
the beginning of the 1400, Raimondello died and his son Giovanni Antonio took
his place, but since he was too young, his mother
Maria d’Enghien was the regent. Other families to rule the village were : the
Aldemaros, the Sambiases and the Zurlos. They sold the village to the De
Marinis. At the beginnings of the 16th century the village was ruled
by the Paladinis, then by the Albrizzis, the Erriquez, the Filomarinis and
finally the Della Torres.Among the famous people of Salice we remember:
Francesco De Castris (jurist), Agostino Passante (Bishop of Pozzuoli), Giuseppe
Passante (bishop and philosopher), Arcangelo De Castris (senator) e Mario
Albrizzi (Cardinal of Ancona).
