FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF GAGLIANO DEL CAPO
San Dana is the other
small village under the administration of Gagliano. We do not know how and
when
the village was created but we suppose there used to be a farm of the Greek
Bishops of Leuca. The name of the village would derive from the Greek martyr
‘Dano’. It was ruled by the Del Balzos and the
Antogliettas. The Mother Church was built in the 16th century, it
looks very simple with a painting of the Virgin. There is a small Basilian
Church dedicated to St Apollonia of the 11th century. Inside there is
a beautiful fresco of Our Lady with the Child but it is not in good conditions.
Among the native people of San Dana we remember: Nicola Antonio Sergi (Grammar
and Rhetoric teacher), Ferdinando Coppola (priest), Marco Aurelio Bleve
(lawyer), Lucio Bleve (physician), Emilia Romasi and Enrico Daniele built the
Hospital of Gagliano.
