FRAZIONE
OF THE COMMUNE OF VERNOLE
Strudà was probably
founded by the Saracens who used to gather here in some periods. The might come
from
the word "strix" that means a bird of prey. The feudal age started after the
arrival of the Normans and the king Tancredi of Altavilla incorporated the
centre into the County of Lecce. In the following years it was annexed to the
Principality of Taranto and it was ruled by the Orsini De Balzos first and then
by the Paganos, the Salluzzos, the Copertis and, finally by the Saracinos. Here
there are two religious monuments to visit, that is the richly decorated XVIII
century Mother Church, and the simple Chapel of the Lady of the Graces dating
to the XVII century. Outside the urban centre the are some strengthened
farms
as Visciglito Farm.
