The civic coat of arms
of Veglie is marked by a blue background on which there is a gun. In the upper
part
of
the coat of arms there is a five-pointed star too. The origins of this small
town are very ancient as the discovery of megalithic monuments and of Messapian
graves of the IV century B.C. testifies. There are no historical documents
about the first village, but only theories according to which Veglie was founded
in the X century by some Greek led by the Emperor Niceforo. Veglie was invaded
by the Vandals, the Longobards and the Saracens. In the XIV century the
population increased notably thanks to the arrival of the surveyors that had
escaped from the destruction of the near casali of Santa Venia and
Bucidina. The feudal age began after the arrival of the Normans when the king
Tancredi of Altavilla gave this centre to Spinello Delli Falconi. Later as the
Principality of Taranto it was governed by the Orsini del Balzos. In the XIII
century, Veglie was incorporated into the County of Copertino, that was under
the control of Gualtiero di Brienne. Then it was ruled by Guidone De Pertis,
Filippo Bridono, Bartolomeo Bello and the family Prato. In the XV century the
king Ladislao gave the feud to Ottimo De Caris and later to Tristano Di
Chiaromonte. In 1484, this small town suffered the unexpected siege of the
Venetians. In the XVI century Umberto
Squarciafico (from Genoa) first and the Pinelli later ruled this centre. The
last vassals were the Pignatellis of Belmonte, that governed until 1806. A
lot of famous local people can be mentioned. Aureliano De Mitri lived in the
XIX century and, after graduating in Medicine, he became an appreciated
physician. He wrote lots of works and newspaper articles, and he got important
recognitions. Adolfo Verrienti ( XIX -XX centuries) was already popular for
his intelligence when he was still a little boy. He studied in Lecce and after
a short period he became an esteemed priest. He graduated at the University of
Rome in Canonical Law and wrote a lot of works. Ferdinando Quarta, after
graduating in Law, became an appreciated lawyer of the XIX century. Aldo
Valente was born in 1906 and graduated in Turin in Engineering. He took part in
the Second World War. He lived in Turin where he founded, together to other
collaborators, a magazine and two daily papers. During all his life he had many
professional successes. Francesco Coltelli was a good monk and man of letters.
He taught theology, philosophy and other subjects.
