Andrano has many
interesting artistic monuments. The historical centre is very characteristic,
with
narrow
streets and the beautiful “case a corte”. The Castle was built in the 17th
century on a thirteenth-century castle. In the past this castle was a defensive
structure and was then changed in a palace. The Castle has a square plan and
four interesting towers. Two towers have a cylindrical shape while the other two
are square. The outside of the castle is decorated in Baroque style, inside
there is a great courtyard. The Mother Church is dedicated to Sant'Andrea
Apostolo and dates to the 18th century. The church was built by the
Caracciolos after a miraculous event that took place between the 16th
and the 17th centuries when the village was saved from the Turk
invasions. Inside this church the tourist can admire the grave of Giovanni
Anthonio Saracino, who was killed by
the Turks while he was defending his village. The paintings of Our Lady of the
Rosary and of St Domenico are very interesting. The façade is fine and sober,
with a beautiful portal and a big window. The church has a Latin cross plan,
some altars made in our local stone, statues of the saints and several paintings
representing St Joseph, St Vito and St Andrea. The Basilian Crypt of the
Attarico is outside the urban area and the tourist can admire the rests of
ancient paintings on the walls. The protector of Andrano is St Mary of the
Graces and the population celebrates her on August 2nd , 3rd
, 4th and 5th .
The nickname of the people of
Andrano is “mangiabrufichi” that is “those who eat wild figs”. The fruits
of
the wild figs are inedible but they are necessary for pollination.
