Inhabitants' name: Andranesi |
The civic coat
of arms of Andrano has a red background with a bunch of seven ears. There are
many
hypotheses
about the origins of the village. It was probably founded in the 9th-10th
centuries during the Saracen invasions. We could also suppose it was founded by
a group of Crete colonist exiled from their island. The most reliable hypothesis
says that the village was built by those who survived the destruction of the
ancient Hamlet of Cellino, in the 5th century B.C. which is described
in some historic documents. The name of the village would derive from the name
of Sant'Andrea, the former patron saint of this village. in the 6th
century the village was ruled by the De Hugots. Andrano was also ruled by the De
Castillos, the Bortones, the Saracinos, the Spinolas, the Gallones and finally
by the Caracciolos of Marano. This village as many others in the Salento were
attacked by
the Longobards, the Saracens and the Turks. Among the famous people of Andrano
we remember: Girolamo Massa was a member of a noble family and lived in the 19th
century. When he was thirty-three he decided to become priest. Girolamo Massa
studied at the seminary of Otranto and he lived trying to help the neighbour.
Flavio Giuchi lived in the 18th century and wrote some interesting
works. Giovanni Antonio Saracino lived in the 15th century, he was
the lord of the village and died in Otranto fighting the Turks. Luigi Nuzzo
lived between the 19th and the 20th century, and was a
beloved priest. He always cared for the poor people and created the first
maternal school of this town.
