In the
historic centre the tourist can visit the typical ‘case a corte’ and beautiful
palaces such as the
Town
Hall Palace. It is in St Lorenzo Square, is in Neoclassic style and was built in
the 19th century. The stately castle or Baronial Palace was built in
the 18th century on the rests of a pre-existing structure of the 15th
century. Its square tower looks very interesting and dates to the 16th
century. The Mother Church is dedicated to St Lorenzo and was built in the 16th
century after a prodigious event because the saint saved the population from a
terrible epidemic of cholera. This church is also a fortified building and it
used to be a shelter for the population against the invaders’ attacks. Its
façade has a beautiful portal while inside there are some gracious altars and
some paintings attributed to Oronzo Tiso. The old church of St Lorenzo dated to
the 11th century but there are only rests left. The Church of Our
Lady of the Annunciation was built in the 16th century according to
the will of Francesco Paladini. The façade and the inside are both very simple.
The Church of Our Lady of the Sorrow was finished in 1970 and has a modern
style. The steeple of St Lorenzo was built in the 19th century and
has elegant decorations. The patron saint of Lizzanello is St Lorenzo and the
population celebrates him on January 19th.
The nickname
of the people of Lizzanello is“fimmene bestie” , ‘women – beasts’. This nickname
certainly appears unpleasant but it means that the women of the village are
strong and hard workers.
