The long and narrow
streets and the typical case a corte make the historical centre of
Melissano really
special.
There used to be an imposing Castle too but now it does not exist any longer: it
was situated in Piazza Vecchia ("Old Square"), it was built in the XIV century
and it was commissioned by the noble vassal Amendolia. At Melisasno you can
visit a lot of religious monuments such as the Mother Church dedicated to the
Madonna of the Rosary and to St Anthony. The jobs of constructions started in
1885 and finished in 1902. It was planned by the architect Ferdinando Campasena,
and it has a very beautiful façade with a well decorated front door, two
side-doors and three ample windows. In this church with nave and two aisles
you can admire some elegant altars and some interesting canvasses as that
representing St Anthony, that was commissioned by the noble vassal De Franchis
in the XVIII century. The Church of Jesus Saviour has been built recently
(1997) and it is marked by a very modern and simple style. The Church of St
Anthony was built in the XVI century. It has been restored a lot of times so far
and during the last jobs of restorations some bones were
recovered, thus proving the presence of ancient tombs inside the church. In the
Church of the Immaculate, dating back to the XIX century, there is the statue of
the Madonna of the Miracle, protagonist of a miraculous event. According to a
popular story in 1869, a terrible storm started suddenly and then a terrible
cyclone afflicted Melissano. The people, very frightened, tried to take refuge
in the houses and when something terrible was to happen the sun appeared and
the storm stopped. Straight away on the face of the statue of the Madonna of the
Miracle some tears appeared mysteriously. The church is well decorated and,
inside, you can appreciate the elegant altars and a very interesting painting
from the artistic point of view representing the Madonna of the Carmine. The
Clock Tower was built at the beginning of the XX century and it was projected by
the engineer Giovanni Marsano. Outside the urban centre there used to be the
Abbey of St Maria de Civo, built in the XI century. Now hardly some rests have
left. In the open country there are some farms too as
Coloni Farm dating back to the XIX century, and Cutinazzi Farm built
in the XVIII century. The protector of this small town is St Anthony from
Padua, that is celebrated solemnly on June 13th.
The nickname of the
inhabitants of Melissano is "cargnocculari" that literally means frogs. They
have this nickname because in the past when the first residences were built
there were marshes and ponds that are the ideal habitat for these animals.
After the jobs of reclamation, the swamps disappeared, but the inhabitants of
Melissano have still this nickname
