In Squinzano there are several Palaces worth visiting: De
Filippis Palace, De Castro Palace, Frassaniti
Palace,
Enriquez Palace and so on. The Mother Church is dedicated to St Nicola and was
built between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century on the
rests of an old 16th century church probably dedicated to the previous patron
saint, St Vito. The façade has some portals in Renaissance style. The church has
a nave and two aisles. Inside the tourist can admire a beautiful wooden choir
(1843) by Giuseppe Fella from Oria, a fresco representing the coat-of-arms
(1800) and some old refined paintings. The bell tower of the Parish Church is 32
m high, in baroque style, was finished in 1660 by Saverio Tommasi. The Church of
St Mary of the Graces was built in 1500 because the population aimed to thank
Our Lady for the independence granted to the village. It has a nave and two
aisles and inside there are some beautiful paintings and refined sculptures.
Outside the urban area there is the
Church of St Mary of Cerrate, one of the most charming churches in the region.
It is in Romanic style and was built in the 12th century on a pre-existing
Basilian building. The portal of the church is stately and there are some
refined sculptures on sacred subjects. The frescos of 15th and 16th century can
be admired inside as well as the Romanic Byzantine cloister with its elegant
Renaissance well. The Church of St Mary the Queen was finished in 1969 and is in
modern style. It is an oval and inside the tourist can visit a beautiful mosaic
representing the Virgin. The Church of the Annunciation is situated near the
cemetery and was built in the 17th century. It is an aisleless church, has
beautiful baroque altars and a 18th century organ. The grave of Maria Manca is
in this church. Other churches of Squinzano are: the Church of St Salvatore, the
Church of Mater Domini (18th century) and the Church of St John the Baptist. In
the countryside of Squinzano there are a few rural chapels. The Chapel of St
Elisabeth dates to the 17th century, was sacked and then deconsecrated. The
Chapel of Our Lady of the Sky is at present in very bad conditions and this is a
real shame because it is a very old church. It has a basilican plan and dates to
the 14th century. The Chapel of St Mary of Monte Vergine was built in the 17th
century and belongs to the De Castros. The small Chapel of Our Lady of Loreto
was built by those who survived the First World War. The patron saint of the
village is St Nicola and the population celebrates him on the second Sunday of
August.
The people of Squinzano are usually called ‘cuckold’ because
the women of Squinzano were told to be of easy virtue and they would cheat on
their husbands. There is also a second nickname and it sounds like ‘keep out
from Squinzano’ and there is an historic anecdote that can explain it. In 1820,
the King Ferdinando of Borbone came to visit Lecce and stopped also in Squinzano
at the Convent of the Alcantar Monks. On the way back he was forced to stop in
the countryside and to look for a place where he could relieve himself. Since he
was in a rush, he did not notice a bush of stinging nettles which eventually
caressed his naked parts to his great disappointment and discomfort. The King
run away from Squinzano and promised to keep his distance from that village.
