In the historical centre
of Taviano apart from the beautiful and typical case a corte there are
some very
interesting
noble residences as the stately the Baronial Palace, reconstructed in the XVI
century on an ancient manor house. The façade has a simple portal over which you
can see the coat of arms. The Mother Church is dedicated to St. Martino and it
was built in 1635 on an ancient XV century small church. The façade has an
interesting portal over which there is an enormous well decorated window and two
niches containing the sculptures of saints. From the outside you can also see
the enormous bell tower and the Clock Tower dated 1875. In this church with
nave and two aisles there are some richly decorated baroque altars and splendid
paintings representing the crucifix, the Purgatory and the Nativity, made by
Andrea Coppola. There is also a statue of St. Martino made by Vito Russo, an
artist of Salve. The Church of St Lucy was built on the rests of a pre-existing
monument in 1650 and it was commissioned by Don Francis Lonello. The façade is
very simple and it mirrors the simplicity of the inside, where there are only
two altars. The ceiling is very interesting to see since it has rich
decorations. The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was built in the XVII century
and it was commissioned
by the baron Andrea De Franchis and, initially, it was dedicated to St Anthony
from Padua. Now it is a Marian Sanctuary. The façade has a portico with three
arcs and a fresco of the Holy Virgin Mary. It is decorated according to the
baroque style and, inside you can admire some elegant wooden altars covered
with golden. Outside the urban centre you can visit the small Church of St
Marina (dated 1704) where you can see some interesting ancient frescos. The
Church of the Immaculate was built between the XVII and the XVIII centuries, it
is with nave and two aisles and it has interesting baroque decorations and
valuable XVIII century paintings Liborio Riccio. The elegant façade has two
identical portals and three well-decorated crosses. In the past there were other
religious monuments as the Church of the Madonna of the Graces, the Church of St
Anne and the Church of St. Lazzaro. At Taviano you can also see some
strengthened farms as Ospina Farm. The protector of Taviano is
St. Martino, that is celebrated solemnly on November 11th.
The nickname of the
inhabitants of Taviano is " ventri 'nchiati", an expression used to mean those
people
whose
belly is swollen. In fact, in the past there were wide marshy zones that
favoured the malaria, an illness that causes the swelling of the belly. The
swamp called "li foggi" was extended for 110 hectares and after the jobs of
reclamation it does not exist any longer. The people of Taviano are also famous
for being stingy and for their good-looking women.
