The historical centre of
Trepuzzi has very beautiful case a corte and imposing noble residences
like Spinelli
Palace,
built in the XVIII century the Baronial Palace, that was erected in the XVII
century on a pre-existing fortress. It has been restored a lot of times and in
the past the feudal vassals used to live here. The main façade has a richly
decorated portal on which you can see a civic coat of arms. Among the several
religious monuments there is the Mother Church dedicated to Our Lady of the
Assumption, built in 1603 (but it was first dedicated to St Peter). The imposing
bell tower dates to the XVII century and it is very interesting. The main façade
of the church has a beautiful front door and an ample window. The plant is
Latin cross and inside you can admire some elegant baroque altars, a beautiful
wooden pulpit, an XVIII century organ, some interesting canvasses representing
holy scenes and a wooden choir. There is also a beautiful statue of the Holy
Virgin Mary that, according to a popular story was the protagonist of a
prodigious event. We are told that in 1779, when the French army arrived in the
Salento the population of Trepuzzi was afraid. The people went to the Church to
pray and ask the Madonna's help. Suddenly some drops of sweat appeared on the
face of the Madonna and the priest dried them with a cloth. In the meantime a
dense fog covered Trepuzzi, thus saving this small town from the massacre of the
enemies. In the public gardens you can also see a spire on which the visitors
can admire the Madonna's statue, made at the beginning of the XIX century. The
Neoclassic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was probably built in the XIX century
and it is well decorated. The Church of St. Joseph was erected at the beginnings
of the XVII century, on a pre-existing monument. The façade has a beautiful
front door and some beautiful decorations. Near the Mother Church you can visit
the simply decorated Church of St Anthony Abbot, dating back to the XVII
century. Also the Chapel of the Holy Cross was built in the XVII century and the
façade is as simple as the inside. the Chapels of the Purification and of the
Madonna of the Martyrs were built in the XVIII century. The protectress of
Trepuzzi is Our Lady of the assumption, that is celebrated solemnly on August
15th.
The nickname of the
inhabitants of Trepuzzi is "a 'nfacce a mmare" that means "in front of the sea"
and it
was invented by the malignant inhabitants of the near centres. In fact,
according to a popular anecdote when the king went to Trepuzzi for a visit, he
asked them which gift they wanted. They answered that they desired to move the
village to the sea. The king, sarcastically, suggested them to tie a rope all
around the village and to drag .
