Inhabitants'
name: Trepuzzini |
The civic coat of arms
of Trepuzzi has a white and golden background and it represents a central big
well
and
two side smaller wells. About the origins of this small town a popular story
tells that in the past there was a place dedicated to the god Bacchus, the god
of the wine and of the fruit, and the people used to gather to celebrate him
with dances and games. The toponym might derive from the Latin word "tripudium"
meaning "exultation. According to an other thesis the centre was founded during
the Roman epoch, when some rudimentary huts were built to be used as inns by the
travellers. The huts were erected near three wells, so it was called "trepuzze",
a dialectal word meaning three wells. In the XIII century the populations
increased a lot after the arrival of the surveyors of the near Casale of
Terenziano. During the feudal age the king Tancredi of Altavilla, incorporated
Trepuzzi into the County of Lecce and later it was ruled by the Orsini Del
Balzos and annexed to the Principality of Taranto. Then it was governed by the
Corciolos, the Condòs and the Carignanos until 1806. Also Trepuzzi, like many
towns of the Salento, was invaded by the Turks in 1480.The well-known
characters are several. Pietro Perrone lived between the XVIII and the XIX
centuries and he belonged to the lower class, however he distinguished himself
as a soldier, and he received popular recognition. Giosuè Cleopazzo lived in the
XIX century and was an excellent poet, doctor and lawyer. After helping a lot of
people to recover from typhus he committed suicide. Giulio Rucco lived between
the XVIII and the XIX centuries, and he became an illustrious physician, also
famous in England and in France. Noe Maglietta was an excellent surgeon and
lived in the XVIII century. Francesco Perrone lived in the XIX century, he was
a good chemist and an esteemed poet. He wrote a lot of works and he got many
professional successes.
