In the historical centre
of Vernole you can see and admire the beautiful case a corte and some
ancient
noble
residences as the XIX century De Giorgi Palace and the ancient Baronial
Palace, whose facade is well decorated. One of the most important religious
buildings is the Mother Church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, that
was built in the XVIII century in baroque style. Inside there are some valuable
altars and canvasses to admire. The stately well-decorated bell tower is dated
1740. The old Church of St Mary is situated near the cemetery and it is not in
good condition, so the mass is never celebrated here. The main façade has a
beautiful portal and two niches containing some statues of saints. The Church
of St Anne dates to the XVII century and it is situated in Veneto Square. It is
very simple and the statue of the Saint is on the spire and it was probably
commissioned by a citizen of Vernole. The VXVII century Church of the
Visitazione, is not used to celebrate the mass because it is not in good
condition while the Calvary, that is near the church is really beautiful (XIX
century). An other monument of particular historical-artistic interest is the
subterranean oil press situated in Veneto Square: it was dug in the rock in
1576 and for a long time the oil was produced here. In the territory of Vernole
there is a natural oasis denominated "Cesine", that is six hundred hectares wide
and it is run by the WWF. This town has two protectors: St Anne and St
Gioacchino who are both celebrated on July 26th.
The nickname of the
inhabitants of Vernole is "lenghi and ressi" that, literally means "long and
fat." Actually
this expression does not make reference to the physical aspect of these people
but to the fact they are naïve and a bit foolish. This nickname was given to
them by the inhabitants of the near villages who invented an unusual popular
story to justify it. The story tells that since on the roof of the Mother Church
there was much grass, the population of Vernole decided take an ass on the roof
and let it eat the grass. They put a rope around the neck of the poor animal to
lift it and they saw the animal moving its face showily. They believed that it
was laughing since it was going to eat some food, on the contrary the poor
beast was choking to death.
