The civic coat of arms
of Vernole has a blue background on which there is a big bird flying on a
stately
tree.
Also this little town has ancient origins, dating to the prehistory, as the
near menhirs testify. There are no historical documents about the first, urban
centre: probably it was built in the IX after the arrival of the people who
escaped from the destruction of the neighbouring Hamlets of Roca and St
Lorenzo, that were invaded and sacked by the Saracens. The first historical
document is about the Norman domination during which the king Tancredi of
Altavilla gave the feud to the family Accordi, who later gave a part of the feud
to the Bishop of Lecce. The Accordis were succeeded by the Briennes and, later
Vernole was annexed to the Principality of Taranto under the control of the
Orsini Del Balzos. This town was ruled by several feudal vassals as the D'
Aragona, the Tarantinos, the Paganis, and the Salluzzos. The last vassals were
the Bernardini, that governed until 1806. Among the most important local people
there are Gian Giacomo Acaya and Oronzo Reale. The latter lived in the XX
century and became a politician who played an important role in
the Italian politics: he was appointed Secretary of the Republican Party, Lord
Chancellor and Judge of the Constitutional Court. Gian
Giacomo Acaya lived in the XVI century and, after studying architecture, he
became a famous architect of the Kingdom of Naples. He planned a lot of
fortresses in many towns, and he died miserably in a jail of a castle he himself
had projected.
