The Castle of
Casarano was built in the 17th century on a pre-existing church of
the 15th century. Its
rooms
are large and richly decorated. It was built for the D’Aquinos and they wanted
it to be a wonderful castle. The De Judicibus Palace is another important
palace. Its facade is beautiful and has a portal. The inside is finely decorated
and the ceiling are covered with frescos. The Parish Church is dedicated to Our
Lady of the Annunciation. It was built at the end of the 17th century
on the rests of a 16th century structure. The façade has a beautiful
portal, three niches and two stately columns. It is an aisleless church and has
paintings and frescos on the walls. The 18th century painting by
Oronzo Tiso represents three children among the flames. The church of the Virgin
has taken the place of the Church of the Annunciation. It dates to the 18th
century and inside there are beautiful altars and paintings by Oronzo Tiso.
During the works of restoration people found two frescos of the 18th
century. The church of St Mary of the Cross was built in the 5th
century and is one of the few monuments of the Byzantine period in the Salento.
It has a nave and two aisles, some mosaics and the frescos representing the life
of Jesus, the Virgin with the Child and the Archangel Gabriel. The
Church of St Domenico dates probably to the 1536. It has a Latin cross plan,
some finely decorated altars and a painting representing the Virgin. Next to the
church there is the former Convent of the Dominican Friars. It was built in the
17th century, its stately façade is very elegant. It is now the Town
Hall. The Church of St Peter dates to the 18th century and is very
simple. Inside there are five paintings of sacred subjects by Oronzo Tiso. The
Church and the Convent of St Mary of the Angels were built in the 16th
century and the soil was given by the lord of the time, Gurello Filomarini. Some
old fortified farms can still be seen outside the urban area.
The people of
Casarano have three nicknames: “sacare” (snakes), “machi” (foolish people) and
“zocculari”(cunning
people). The first nickname was created by the people of Melissano. The second
and the third nicknames are one opposite to the other, because the first refers
to people who do not react to insults, while the other means they are shrewd and
clever.
