The civic coat of arms
of Scorrano has three oak trees with an eagle flying high in the sky. The

blue. In the territory of this village people found two menhirs called ‘La Cupa’
some bronze tools, medieval graves. We are not certain about the origins of the
village but we suppose the village was founded by a Roman centurion called
Emilio Scauro who was given this land for the courage he had shown in the
battlefield. He built here a house for himself and his soldiers then the village
grew bigger and bigger. When the Normans came, the village was included in the
County of Lecce. In the Swabian period was ruled by Pietro and Angelo but they
were hung by the Angevins. It was also ruled by Pietro De Noha, the King
Ladislao and then sold to the Tolomeis. In 1464 it was ruled by Ferrante
D’Aragona. In the 16th century , the Prince Gonzaga
from Molfetta sold the village to Ettore Brajda. It was also ruled by Del
Balzos, the Maremontes, the Tranis, the Milazzis and
finally by the Frisari. Among the famous people of Scorrano we remember: Andrea
Manfredi, Giuseppe Cota and Tommaso d’Alessandro. This latter was born in 1515
and had a disposition for Mathematics. He became a Barnabite Monk and spent his
life praying and studying. He died in 1590 after a severe and long eyes illness.
